I first heard of Bon Iver back in 2008. The first track I heard by them was ‘Skinny Love’ and since, I’ve been hooked. This is probably my favourite album ever, and is easily one of the most recommendable albums I have on my iTunes. It was followed up by an EP named ‘Blood Bank’ which adds 4 amazing tracks to their catalogue.
Following the breakup of his previous band ‘DeYarmond Edison’, Justin Vernon secluded himself in a log cabin in the woods of Wisconsin. He originally intended just to bury his head in the sand, and forget about all his troubles, however this changed. All of his heartache, love, loss, emotion and soul poured into song. With his own aged recording equipment, a guitar, a set drums and a microphone, we were given ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’.
‘Skinny Love’ is probably one of the best songs I have ever heard, and the stand out of the album. So much emotion has been put into it, and it really shows. It depicts him trying to drag out his relationship for as long as he could, knowing full well, it’s all a lie. It really sums up all of his emotion. The album is also birth to other fantastic songs, such as ‘The Wolves (Act I and II)’ ‘Creature Fear’ and ‘Flume’. You can tell simply by listening to the lyrics, the pain Vernon has gone through, and this comes off as a masterpiece. It’s sad to me that bands like this don’t make it to the mainstream, when you have new R ’n’ B Artists that lack talent at the top of the charts week in, week out.
I seriously couldn’t recommend this album enough. I feel it is one of, if not the best album I have ever listened to.
