Well, Foo Fighters were in my hometown of Perth, Australia so what better way to spend my night then by catching my favourite band of all time, right? Attended with my father, whom pussied out of going into the moshpit, a bit of a buzzkill I suppose but was fun all the same.
Got to nib Stadium at around 4pm, the luxury of free public transport with the tickets allowing us to make it there quicker, thus on time. Skipped out on merch as Dad wasn't wanting to shell out $45 for a shirt, plus I had a Dave Grohl shirt on anyway. Had good ol' Chicken Treat and a mango/passionfruit Boost Juice smoothie for dinner... shit be good, yo.
Headed in to catch the closing songs of the local opener, "Calling All Cars"' set, some good stuff by them, definately going to get some of their music. The other opener was Canadian... screamo rock (??) band "Fucked Up". The music wasn't bad, but the singer was shit, albeit entertaining by spending the entire gig in the crowd just... getting weird. Also, the female hipster bassist (kinda fat, but oh well) had a see through white shirt on. Boobs ftw.
Then we got a decent hour set from Tenacious D, who fucking rocked the place. Tribute, Wonderboy and Fuck Her Gently got the biggest crowd responses, they had some good stuff; felt like a stage performance that told a story which is great. Kinda disappointed that they didn't get the full stage set up like they usually do with the pillars and shit, but it was still pretty badass. Then there is the realisation that "Holy shit, I am this close to Jack Black live and in the flesh, the dude from High Fidelity (one of my favourite movies) and he's fucking kicking ass!"
Finally, during a half an hour intermission, shit got real, the mosh got set and out came the Foo Fighters! Opening with Bridge Burning, Rope, The Pretender and My Hero, the place was fucking electric! Other standouts were Breakout, Walk, Monkey Wrench and This is a Call, as well as a stellar cover of Pink Floyd's "In The Flesh", in which I felt like the only person who knew what the fuck they were singing. Then after a badass All My Life performance, the routine fake finish occured, where we had Dave and Taylor fucking around backstage negotiating an encore with the crowd. To begin the encore, we had the acoustic stylings of Wheels, Times Like These and Best of You dedicated to those in the nosebleeds (Dave had a second stage set up much closer to the nosebleeds at the back, so us at the front GA section had to stare at Dave's ass for three songs). Then, back to the band with Dear Rosemary (unfortunately no Bob Mould...), then covers of Tom Petty's Breakdown and Queen's Tie Your Mother Down that got the house a bit amped before the finale of Everlong, which sent the crowd home happy.
Great concert, even better than my first time seeing Foo Fighters in '08. It's almost surreal seeing these guys so close, but maybe that's just because I'm a fanboy at heart. From what I was told, Next Generation also attended, and I'm sure Hurricane can give a better report of the Melbourne concerts.
Overall, f**king epic.
