Here we are... the grandest stage of them all. This is where the action is, this is WrestleMania, and tonight, I give my verdict on each of the WrestleMania matches, as well as an overall verdict on the entire event.
The WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2011
An awesome class of inductees, this year. Of course, we headline with the Headliner himself, the Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels! Arguably one of, if not the greatest WWF/E wrestler ever, so no doubt about this induction. We also get to see the inductions of The Road Warriors, Jim Duggan and Sunny, who are all deserving of their inductions. But why in the blue hell is Drew Carey there... he appeared for a total of five air-time minutes at the 2001 Royal Rumble. Surely there are more memorable celebrities to induct. But still, a class of classes for 2011.
Edge (w/Christian) vs. Alberto Del Rio (w/Brodus Clay) for the World Heavyweight Championship
This match should be a really good one, in my opinion. I think these two really compliment eachother in the ring, and have some really good in-ring chemistry. My only issue is... what will be so different about this match compared to the others we have seen on SmackDown over the past few months? Plus, Brodus Clay just feels like dead weight in this match. Still, there is one big thing about this match... and that is Christian turning heel. Isn't it obvious? We will see him get jealous, cost Edge the match and those two will go off and feud, whilst Del Rio enjoys his new gold. Simple enough, expect a good match.
The Miz vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship
This feud has obviously been overshadowed by the interactions of John Cena and the Rock, still, I love how The Miz has been throughout this. He has been my favourite part of this feud, and I really hope he retains the championship. We should also see the annual awesome John Cena entrance (barring last years boredom gun-twirling fest), and of course, some involvement from The Rock. Be it interference or a post-match encounter, there will be something and it should be good. Still, the awesome build-up should result in an awesome match.
The Undertaker vs. Triple H in a No Holds Barred Match
Of course this is going to be No Holds Barred, this match was always going to be more of a fight than a match (see WrestleMania X7 for more on that). But yes, despite the fact these two warriors are aging, expect one hell of a brawl between these two which is hopefully as good as their previous Mania encounter. Now, in terms of buildup, it is a shame that most of it has come from interviews with others, but both of their major interactions have been very powerful, so we can't really complain. Also, expect Shawn Michaels to do something to cost Triple H the match. But yes, should be a powerful match, and of course, the 19-0 pyro. Plus, apparently Triple H is entering with a Metallica theme, so that should be good.
Jerry "The King" Lawler vs. Michael Cole (w/Jack Swagger) with "Stone Cold" Steve Austin as Special Guest Referee
So, we all know Lawler is going to get his revenge and piledrive the fuck out of Michael Cole. But this feud has been great, other than the awkward moments of Cole bringing up Lawler's family. Obviously, expect Michael Cole and Jack Swagger to get Stunners, and Lawler and Stone Cold will share some brewskis to celebrate. Should be a short, but rewarding match, plus I look forward to seeing how Cole goes in the ring.
Randy Orton vs. CM Punk
The battle of the demented. Both of these guys have done the best they can for this feud with what they have been given, and it was a pleasure to see Orton play "Punt-a-Nexus" every week, and Punk's reaction. It will be interesting to see how they play it out with Orton's "knee injury", and whether there will be any sort of Nexus involvement, possibly from old members. Still, these two can really bring it in the ring, and if given adequate time, should pull off a great match.
Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes
Sadly, I see this being the same as last year's Mysterio match. The build-up with this has been really good, especially seeing this new, darker side of Rhodes, as well as the Dusty cameo. There is alot of potential, but I do see this being a quick victory for Rey, so don't expect too much from this match other than Rey's special attire.
John Morrison, Trish Stratus and Snooki vs. Dolph Ziggler and Lay-Cool in a Six-Person Intergender Tag Team Match
Now, don't be so quick to write this one off. Okay, so we know the faces will win, since this match is purely for the media publicity (and that was one of the original reasons for WrestleMania). So, barring the Snooki-Thesz press, hair pulling and bitchslaps, let's take a look at the rest of this match. Not an awesome build-up, and I am disappointed at the lack of importance that Trish has been given. Still, expect some good technical wrestling between Ziggler and Morrison, and enjoy seeing Trish kicking Lay-Cool's asses. Won't be a long match, but should be exciting.
Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan for the United States Championship
I expect big things from this match. Of course, this match will be lucky to get anything more than ten minutes, but expect it to be a fast, action packed affair. These two superstars styles really compliment eachother, so in one corner, we have the brawler, and in the other we have the acrobat, and I expect alot of action. The buildup has been poor with little importance, but I am glad to see Bryan on the mainstage, and possibly some importance given back to the United States Championship. Look forward to this one, guys.
Kane, Big Show, Santino Marella and Vladimir Koslov vs. The Corre in an Eight Man Tag Team Match
First off all... where in the blue hell is Kofi Kingston? Barrett takes his Intercontinental Championship and we don't see the follow up? Oh well. It's a nice blast from the past seeing Kane and Show back together and I am amazed of how well they turned Kane from heel to face so quickly. Plus, seeing Santino is always entertaining for me, so expect some Cobramania. The Corre have been alright on their end of the bargain in the feud, they have looked dominant as of late. Not sure how this one will be played out, but don't expect anything serious, especially after we saw Kane and Big Show join in on the trumpet dance on Raw. Should be an okay match, nothing special though.
The Overall WrestleMania
So, we have a fair few major selling points in the form of The Rock, The Streak and The Snook-ster. Plus, we will get our annual special of a shitload of pyro, some cool new attires (barring Kofi's gay one from last year) and some interesting matches. Of course, I am annoyed at the lack of Kingston and McIntyre on this card, but I do expect this one to surpass expectations. I will be tuning in to this four hour extravaganza, and I look forward to it. Heres hoping for a jolly good show, so bring on Atlanta!
