Bret Hart (c) Vs Shawn Michaels
The Montreal Screwjob
On the 9th of November 1997, in Montreal Canada, one of the most infamous wrestling events in the history of the WWF occured. Bret Hart, had already gotten a new contract, at rival company WCW, and would start there as of December 5th. As the current WWF Champion after defeating the Undertaker, at Summerslam in 1997. He was booked into a match with Shawn Michaels, the leader of D Generation X. This match would take place at Survivor Series.
Vince McMahon was adamant on Hart dropping the title, however Bret refused to do so. Because of the numerous antics that Shawn had performed over the weeks (including stuffing the Canadian flag up his nose) Bret felt dropping the title in his home country, would be disrespecting him, and the home fans.
On the night of 9th of November 1997, Hart made his way down the aisle to defend his World Title. The match went back and forth until Shawn locked in Harts own finisher, the Sharpshooter. As soon as it was applied, Senior Official, Earl Hebner called for the Bell, without Bret tapping out. A ring of the bell, a grab of the belt, a spit in the face, and the Montreal Screwjob was complete.
Bret Hart left for WCW. The WWF Championship was placed firmly around the waist of Shawn Michaels, and we were left with the infamous line of “Bret, screwed Bret!”
